Master Programs

MarBiol is the main coordinator of the International Master of Science in Marine Biological Resources (IMBRSea), a joint Master's program organised by eleven European universities in the field of marine sciences. Other Master programs where MarBiol is involved are Oceans & Lakes, IMaNema and the Master of Biology.

The International Master of Science in Marine Biological Resources (IMBRSea), is a joint Master program organised by eleven European universities in the field of marine sciences, supported by the European Marine Biological Resource Centre (EMBRC). The IMBRSea program is an Erasmus Mundus programme, which builds upon the strengths of the previous International Master of Science in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation (EMBC+), and helps to prepare students for the rapidly evolving demands of the blue bio-economy, as well as research in the sustainable use of marine biological resources.

Oceans and Lakes

The 2-year master programme in “Master of Science in Marine and Lacustrine Science and Management” (Oceans & Lakes) addresses students with a background in Sciences.

Oceans & Lakes is an inter-university programme organized by the Faculty of Sciences of Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB, Free University of Brussels), Universiteit Antwerpen (UAntwerpen, Antwerp University) and Universiteit Gent (UGent, Ghent University). The students are provided with a strong fundamental and applied knowledge and prepared for an active role in the scientific research and management of marine and lacustrine systems.

The programme adopts a multidisciplinary approach integrating physical, chemical geological, ecological and societal aspects and including nature conservation and sustainable development.

The International Master of Science in Agro- and Environemental Nematology (IMaNema) is a globally unique 2-year MSc programme in English and brings together internationally renowned staff to train students in the broad field of agricultural and environmental aspects of nematology.

Master of Biology

The Master in Biology has a far-reaching influence on numerous areas within science and society. The research domain of biology itself is very broad, and covers the entire spectrum of life, its diversity and its formation at all the different organization levels, ranging from a cell and ecosystem to the level of the biosphere. Actual topics and challenges such as protection of endangered species, global change, sustainability, cloning of organisms, dangerous diseases and medical progress all have their roots in biology. Biology also contributes to numerous conceptual innovations that lead towards new disciplines such as molecular biology and biotechnology. Biology is an exciting and ever-evolving field of study thanks to its close interaction with a broad range of other disciplines such as chemistry, geology, geography and physics.
