Research Question
How can coastal social-ecological systems be used, managed and appreciated sustainably by a diverse set of stakeholders?

Jean Hugé is an inter-disciplinary conservation & sustainability scientist studying human-nature interactions, with a strong interest in collaborative environmental governance, social-ecological systems management, (sustainability) impact assessment, biodiversity conservation effectiveness and human-wildlife conflicts. His interdisciplinary background has led him to work on a range of (inter)national research projects, e.g. on biodiversity conservation effectiveness, on the plural valuation of nature, on the discourse and practice of sustainability assessments, on climate- and biodiversity-inclusive development cooperation, and on ecosystem services in Biosphere Reserves. He has a strong international track record including fieldwork and missions in sub-Sahara Africa, south-east Asia and Ecuador. His focus systems are coastal and marine areas (mangroves in particular) and protected areas (PAs). In February 2025, he was appointed as Assistant Professor to conduct research on social-ecological aspects of coastal and marine environments and to teach in the inter-university Master in Marine & Lacustrine Science & Management (Master in Oceans & Lakes).
