SINAPSIS 2019 in Ghent
The PhD students Iván Loaiza Alamo and Evelyn Paredes Corales from our Marine Biology research group were part of the Organizer Committee of the IV meeting of Peruvian Scientists in Europe - SINAPSIS 2019. For the first time in Belgium, around 120 Peruvian scientists were together in a successful event placed in ‘Het Pand’ in Gent (23-25th October), this in cooperation with CESAM (Central and South American) Platform and Ghent University (UGent). Several fields were addressed on this meeting, from Physics to Biology, passing through Medicine among other scientific and engineering fields (see SINAPSIS web). Among these multi-disciplinary fields, topics related to Marine Sciences such as Antarctica research and the recent cooperation between Peru and Belgium were present during the event, also the importance of the study of current Environmental concerns, e.g. El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the ongoing Climate Change, and their impacts to Peruvian ecosystems/civilizations.
It is noteworthy to mention that SINAPSIS 2019 also reunited researchers and members from institutions such as the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS), Vlaams Instituut voor de Zee (VLIZ), European Commission (EC), VLIR-UOS, among other important Belgian institutions.
