DeepCCZ workshop in Friday Harbor, USA
The first week of October the head of our research group (Prof. dr. Ann Vanreusel) and dr. Ellen Pape joined the DeepCCZ workshop in Friday Harbor in the USA.
The aim of the workshop was to synthesize patterns of benthic biodiversity, species ranges, genetic connectivity, ecosystem function, and habitat heterogeneity along and across the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone (Northeast Pacific), and area of interest for deep-sea mining. The ultimate goal was to assess the representivity of the so-called APEIs (Areas of Particular Environmental Interest), a network of reserved areas in which no mining will take place, for exploration contract areas.
The output of the workshop will consist of a publically available workshop report and peer-reviewed papers on the different topics discussed.
